Deep Dive into Goodyear History with Tyrepower
Goodyear's history dates back to 1839, when Charles Goodyear discovered by chance that rubber's consistency can be altered by heat and sulphur. The process, which later came to be known as vulcanisation, strengthens rubber, makes it more flexible, and increases its resistance to heat and other environmental factors.
Charles didn’t know this accidental discovery would be the beginning of one of the largest rubber companies in the world.
Goodyear’s Beginnings
In November 1898, Frank Seiberling founded the ‘Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’. Their initial product line included bicycle and carriage tyres, poker chips, and horseshoe pads.
Later, they expanded into automobile tyres and other rubberised parts. The company also developed and manufactured the first tubeless tyres.
Have you ever heard the phrase "More people ride on Goodyear tyres than any other type"? This slogan was adopted by Goodyear in 1916 when they earned the title of the world's largest tyre company.
In 1917, the first Goodyear blimp was built. It marked the beginning of one of the world’s best-known advertising icons. The term ‘blimp’ refers to a non-rigid airship. The pressure of lifting gas inside the airship was what maintained the blimp’s shape.
The airship Spirit of Goodyear held the world record for the longest continuously operating airship from 2000 to 2014.
